US Veterans Day is a very well recognized American holiday, but many people including even Americans, have a few misconceptions about it. Maybe because of its name or how they spell it and so many other confusions about whom and why exactly it celebrated for.

Facts About US Veterans Day

To clear all these confusions, here are some very important facts, everyone should know.

·        In Spellings, the Word “Veterans” Day, WITHOUT an apostrophe

Many people around the Globe including many Americans, think that the actual spellings contain an apostrophe in its name like “Veterans’ Day” or “Veteran’s Day” but both spellings are wrong.

This day does NOT belong to a single veteran or a particular group of veterans. In fact, it’s a holiday for honoring ALL veterans.

·        Official Definition of Word “Veterans”

The official meaning of word “Veteran” is a person who aided and served on active duty for at least 6 months and above, while allocated as a regular armed services unit of U.S.

·        US Veterans Day is NOT Considered as a Memorial Day

Here is another misconception about this day, as it seems like a Memorial Day.

Usually Memorial Day is someday which is fixed to remember those people or soldiers who give their lives for their country or suffered from any wounds in some battle. Instead of this, “The Veterans Day” is day to give tributes to all of those veterans who served this country in peace or war — alive or dead — although it’s mainly proposed to thank our living veterans for their sufferings and sacrifices.

·        Is “Armistice Day” and “Veterans Day” Same?

When the Agreement of Versailles was signed on 28th of June 1919, the World War I officially ended. However, the fighting was ended about 7 months earlier, when the agreement between Germany and Allies went under effect a cease-fire on 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Therefore, 11th of Nov 1918, was mainly considered as the end of “The War to End All Wars” and labelled as an Armistice Day.

Then the Congress formally documented it in 1926, as the “End of The War”, and in 1938, this day turned out to be an official public holiday, a day to honor and salute all the veterans of World War I.

But then again, the World War II and War of Korea occurred, so on 1st of June 1954, at the will of veteran’s service organizations, the Congress revised the commemorative yet again and replaced the word “Armistice” to “Veterans” so that the day would pay tribute and honor to all the American veterans of all the wars that happened till date.

History of US Veterans Day

As it is mentioned earlier, this public holiday thanks and honors all the veterans of the US armed forces. Here is a brief history about, ‘Why US celebrates Veterans Day?’

For Veterans of the Great World War, this day was celebrated first on 11th November 1919 by the President Wilson. Then in May 1938, this date was declared to be celebrated each year as legal holiday on 11th of November and was named as 'Armistice Day'.

In 1953, a person who was shoe store owner by profession, named Al King, initiated a movement that this day should be celebrated as thanksgiving gesture to all the veterans, not just the ones who served and aided in World War I only. He further suggested that this day should be named as “All” Veterans Day.

Therefore, in May 1954, the President Eisenhower signed this law and Congress modified it formally by replacing the world 'Armistice' with 'Veterans'.

In 1968, the Veterans Day came under the Act of Uniform Monday Holiday as well, specifying that this federal holiday should also be practiced on the 4th Monday of October every year. However, many veteran groups opposed and protested this act and most states of US kept on the practice of the commemorations of this day on 11th November. Then, after so many protests the President Gerald Ford finally signed a law and moved this date back to November 11th.

Since then US Veterans Day continues to be observed on 11th of November with full on swings.

Celebrations of US Veterans Day

The restoration of this day not only preserves the historical worth of the date, but it also helps focusing our devotion and attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day.

A traditional observation of this day is a moment of silence at 11 AM to remember those who fought and sacrifice their lives and blood for peace. This celebration honors and thanks the America's veterans for their pure heart for the country, their devotion and dedication, patriotism and will to serve, to shed blood and even sacrificing their lives for the common good of their country.
